I have always wanted to motivate people to work hard and never give up. But then people always tend to follow those with a large number of following, so I kept thinking maybe no one will pay any heed. Sadly that is how the world works. 🙄 The other day I was watching an interview of Leandra Medine where she said - "Don't try to be something for everyone. Just be everything for someone". That is when I realized that I don't really need half a million followers to inspire people. 🤔
So now I am going to tell you a story of a young girl! 👧
"A girl who thought she was not beautiful enough. A girl who thought she was not smart enough. A girl who thought she was not talented enough. She was insecure about the way she looked, she dressed, she spoke. Everything. She was bullied. She was scared. Scared of being judged by those who did not even have any importance in her life. She was sad. Very sad. And then the worst thing happened she started believing what others told her. 'You are not capable of achieving anything'." 😔 Luckily she had very few but amazing friends while growing up.
Hi, guys. My name is Shivangi and this is my story. When I was in school, I was a pretty average student. It's not that I did not study. I don't know, I worked really hard but I somehow couldn't score well. Or should I say as much as my neighbor's/relative/family friend's kid? And that really affected my confidence level. Well, I do come from a land of comparisons. So I couldn't help but feel that way. All of you who don't know this, in India, your marks decide your worth. If you are not an engineer or a doctor, ah well you are just some average student. Everyone is always competing with someone or the other. It's kinda stupid. 😓
Whenever I was unhappy, I danced. 💃 I love anything and everything related to music and dance. I am a trained Indian Classical Dancer. But when I was learning a few people around me made fun of that because that was uncool. (I really don't understand why people do that!) I am glad that I went on with the training and completed my course.
I always knew that I did not want to be an engineer because I had absolutely no interest in it. But I still studied for the exams because everyone around me did so. Surprisingly, I scored really good marks in my board exams and I was like 'Are you sure these are your marks? Are you sure you did not make any mistake?'. I had that kind of a reaction only because I was told 'You won't be able to do anything!'. 😣
Luckily, I got into one of the best colleges in India for my Bachelor's Degree and that is when everything changed. Everyone around me was so talented. We shared similar interests. Music, Dance, Art and everything in between. I started believing in myself. But a really strange thing happened on the day of my convocation which transformed me into a new person. A friend of mine walked up to me and asked me how much I had scored. Then she replied 'Shivangi! You have a lot of potential. Never listen to what others tell you. Never give up and always keep moving forward.' And oh God! I started crying. For the first time, someone had told me that.
And then the same old thing happened. I wanted to come to the US to do my master's but all those who knew about it kept saying that US universities don't accept 15 years of education. You won't get an admit no matter how hard you try. Only a few people were supporting me, but this time I did not give up. I knew that something will happen. Whenever a negative thought crossed my mind, I remembered my friend's words. DO NOT LISTEN TO OTHERS.
Since the time I have come here, my journey has been amazing. I have learned so much. Met wonderful people all across the world. I am grateful for everything. (So many experiences to share with all of you!) I graduated with a Degree in Mathematics last month. 🎓 I still can't believe a person who once thought that she was not capable, has come so far. I had a terrible stage fright but then I overcame that. I did everything possible from volunteering for social work to learning Piano (Best thing ever!! 🎹).
I know that I haven't done anything extraordinary. But as a 14 year old, I never thought I could achieve this! I just want to tell you all that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Just keep working hard and never listen to what others have to say. Always remember - 'OVERCOME, CONQUER, WIN!'
If I can do it, So can you. You are unique and beautiful in your own way! Just believe in yourself and go with the flow. And NEVER EVER GIVE UP.
And if you still need some more motivation go watch Casey Neistat's video! 😊
Good Night! ❤️
